Fore!! It would have been nice hearing that before a golf ball came screaming through the air almost nailing me and my car as I pulled into the parking area at Fremont Older. It turned out that a couple hacks out for a day at the Saratoga Country Club forgot to yell it. Ah well, just a few short steps away lies safety and the entrance (014) to the preserve and one enjoyable circuit.
I embark on Cora Older and move along a nicely shaded path for a short distance until I reach my first junction (001). I take a right and follow the trail to another junction (002) and head left. Moving along I notice that I won't be under any tree cover for quite some time so I decide to load up on a substantial amount of water. This segment of the preserve is primarily exposed and unprotected trails, wide open to the elements. Where this path connects with Hayfield (003), I head left again and reach the intersection with Coyote Ridge (004). I get on Coyote Ridge and follow it uphill, past another junction (005) and set out towards the Stevens Creek Reservior. I take note of some picturesque views as I travel downhill and spot some vineyards perched along the hillside high above the preserve.
The next union of trails (006) had me somewhat confused as to where to go. Off to the left is a gated path and dead ahead is a cul-de-sac at the end of an established fire road. I went with the gated path. Phew!! There it was. A shimmering body of water that was way too inviting at this stage of my run. I knew I was on the right path now. I carry on and find the portal to the well shaded and deserted Stevens Creek/Tony Look (007). A little fuel and I'm off, moving across a guarded hillside that skirts nicely along the gleaming reservior. There are a couple of small vistas along this path where you can take a break and observe the beauty and serenity of this protected habitat.
Waypoint (008) is an exit from the preserve that spills out on Stevens Canyon Road. There is also a trailhead to my left which I take and continue on my trek. This well shadowed trail ushers me into a picnic area where I find water and some restrooms. Perfect timing! Vamanos! I move uphill through this woodland and reach the apex of this irksome path (009) and join with the entry to Vista Loop (010).
I follow Vista Loop uphill to the junction with Fern (011) and go left. Waypoint (012) marks the union with Coyote Ridge where I head left and meet up with a familiar trail at (005). As I continue downward I notice some footprints I left in the dust when I began this run. From here it's across Hayfield over to Cora Older and back out to the preserve parking lot. An easy one.
